| Obverse description | Facing bust of Emperor Justin I, helmeted and cuirassed, with a diadem visible at the brow, set against a plain field. The emperor is depicted in a frontal, hieratic style characteristic of early Byzantine coinage, wearing a decorated breastplate with a circular medallion (gorgoneion) at the chest. A paludamentum (military cloak) is fastened at the right shoulder. The surrounding legend reads D N IVSTINVS P P AVG, abbreviated for 'Dominus Noster Iustinus Perpetuus Augustus', disposed around the bust. The portrait displays the formal, stylized quality typical of the Constantinople mint under Justin I. |
