Reverse description Circular countermark punch enclosing the Sicilian mint abbreviation SCL in bold Latin letters, applied to the reverse of the host follis. The letters are rendered in a clear, deeply-struck fashion within the circular border of the punch, identifying the countermark as applied at the Syracuse mint in Sicily. The surrounding field retains traces of the original host coin's design beneath the applied countermark. This countermark served as official revalidation of the coin for continued circulation in the Sicilian exarchate.
