Reverse description Large bold M, the Greek numeral denoting 40 nummi, dominates the reverse field and is flanked by a six-pointed star to the left and another to the right, with an additional star positioned below the M. A cross surmounts the apex of the M, a distinctly Christian iconographic addition introduced under Anastasius I's monetary reform of 498 AD. The entire design is enclosed within a circular border, and the mint signature NIKOMI appears in the exergue, identifying the Nicomedia mint. The overall composition is typical of the Anastasian follis type, reflecting the standardized large-module reform coinage.
