French Guiana's colonial treasury issued assignat-style obligations during the Revolutionary period when metropolitan supply lines had collapsed and the colony was effectively cut off from France. This 40 Livres note belongs to a locally produced emergency series printed in Cayenne — rudimentary in execution, necessarily so, given the complete absence of a professional printing infrastructure in the colony.
The livre itself was already being phased out in France by 1795 in favor of the franc decimal system, meaning these notes were denominated in a unit the metropole had essentially abandoned.
