Comments

Pressbaum is a small town west of Vienna in Lower Austria, and its municipal notgeld program was typical of hundreds of similar efforts that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1922. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system after 1918 left local governments without adequate coin, and issuing small-denomination paper was a practical — and legally tolerated — stop-gap. The 40 Heller denomination places this note squarely in everyday transaction territory: tram fares, bread, minor market purchases.

The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0784a suffix suggests at least one variant exists within the Pressbaum series, worth checking against paper stock or serial characteristics.
