| Obverse description | The left half of the note carries a finely executed vignette of the Pöchlarn townscape — a medieval round tower and a church with a spire set against a riverbank, signed 'SELIGER' at lower right. The right half, printed on an ochre ground, bears the denomination numeral '40' in circular cartouches at all four corners, with the vertical legend 'VIERZIG HELLER' running along both side borders. The text panel announces 'DRITTE AUFLAGE' at the top, followed by 'Gutschein der Stadtgemeinde Pöchlarn' in blackletter script, the validity clause, and two facsimile signatures of the Vizebürgermeister and Bürgermeister. |

Pöchlarn — a small Danube crossing town in Lower Austria — issued notgeld like dozens of Austrian municipalities scrambling to cover the acute small-denomination coin shortage that persisted well after the armistice. The 40 Heller value sits in a range specifically targeted at daily market transactions, the kind of change that had effectively vanished from circulation by 1919.
The Seliger/Thonau credit pairing is worth noting: Seliger as designer with Thonau handling the engraving suggests a more deliberate production than the rubber-stamped or typewritten emergency slips many smaller communes produced. Jaksc/Pick reference JPR0755III places this in the third series for Pöchlarn.
