| Obverse description | Uniformed bust of Jean-Jacques Dessalines facing slightly forward, wearing a plumed bicorne hat with elaborate military epaulettes visible at the shoulders. The birth and death years 1758 and 1806 flank the portrait in the field. The legend REPUBLIQUE D'HAITI arcs along the upper periphery, while J.J. DESSALINES EMPEREUR curves along the lower periphery, all within a beaded border. The portrait is rendered in a neoclassical style befitting the commemorative nature of the issue. |
