| Additional information |
The 1867 Treaty of London dissolved the German Confederation's right to garrison Luxembourg's fortress, required the demolition of its fortifications, and guaranteed the Grand Duchy's perpetual neutrality — a settlement that effectively ended Luxembourg's role as a strategic military prize after centuries of occupation by successive European powers. This essai was struck in 1967 to mark that centenary. Essais of this type were produced in very limited numbers for official approval purposes and rarely entered circulation, which is why survivors present in considerably better condition than the circulation strikes they preceded.
