Additional information

Issued to mark the start of the 15th Hijri century — a calendrical milestone that fell in 1980 CE — this was part of a broader wave of commemorative gold struck across the Islamic world for the occasion. Jordan's issue was produced in relatively small numbers, placing it firmly in the commemorative rather than the circulation category from the day of issue. Hussein bin Talal ruled Jordan from 1952 until his death in 1999, and his reign saw several gold commemorative programs aimed largely at foreign collectors and diplomatic gift markets.
