U.S. Army dependent school messes operated their own scrip systems at overseas installations during the postwar occupation period, allowing family members of stationed personnel to purchase meals without handling dollar currency on base. The General Depot at Toul, in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department of northeastern France, was a major Army logistics hub during the NATO years — the installation itself closed following de Gaulle's 1966 decision to withdraw France from NATO's integrated military command, which effectively ended American military presence there and rendered all such local scrip permanently void.
