| Obverse description | Central device features a radiant sun with a human face in relief, displaying alternating straight and wavy rays emanating outward in all directions, set against a flat field. The sun motif, symbolic of the Estado Oriental del Uruguay, is rendered in bold relief with fine detailing on the facial features. A beaded border encircles the design. The circular legend reads REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY, distributed around the periphery, with the date 1844 positioned at the lower portion of the field beneath the sun. |

| Reverse description | Central field displays the large numeral 40 in bold relief within a raised oval cartouche or incuse circle, representing the denomination. The word CENTESIMOS arcs above the numeral along the upper interior of the circular frame. A laurel or olive wreath with symmetrical branches flanks the central device on either side, tied at the base, lending a classical decorative character to the composition. A beaded border runs along the outer rim, consistent with the obverse treatment. |
