Obverse description The Mexican national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a Mexican golden eagle perched upon a cactus and devouring a serpent, rendered in bold relief. An olive branch and an oak branch frame the base of the design. The encircling legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin characters. A beaded border runs along the entire inner rim.

Reverse description The denomination numeral 40 is prominently displayed at the centre within a large stylised capital C, all enclosed within a raised inner circle. This central device is surrounded by a laurel and oak wreath tied at the base, with the date 1906 appearing in the upper field above the wreath and the mint mark M visible at the base beneath the wreath. A beaded border frames the entire reverse design.
