Obverse description The obverse displays a bold Persian inscription occupying the upper field, reading 'In chahal kas ast' (meaning 'This is forty cash'), rendered in large calligraphic Naskh script. A horizontal double rule divides the field, below which the denomination 'XL CASH' appears in Roman letters within the lower field. A dotted border encircles the entire design. The layout reflects the multilingual administrative character of East India Company coinage issued for the Madras Presidency.
