Obverse description Central square hole flanked by four large Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain circular field. Reading clockwise from the top, the reign title inscription 嗣德通寶 (Tu Duc Thong Bao) is boldly cast in regular script (kaishu), identifying the issuing emperor and currency type. The characters are deeply incised with broad strokes, characteristic of Vietnamese imperial cast coinage of the Nguyen dynasty. The flat field surrounding the characters is unadorned, and the rim is plain and slightly raised.
