Additional information

Paris von Lodron consecrated the new Salzburg Cathedral on September 25, 1628 — the culmination of a project begun under his predecessor Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, whose original structure had burned in 1598. The consecration ceremony drew dignitaries from across the Holy Roman Empire at a moment when the Thirty Years' War was actively devastating much of Central Europe, making Lodron's achievement of keeping Salzburg neutral and prosperous enough to complete such a building genuinely remarkable.

The multiple-thaler denominations struck for this event were presentation pieces, not circulation coinage. Zöttl's census documents the 4-thaler as among the rarest of the consecration series.
