Obverse description Mortuary scene depicting King Gustav II Adolf laid out on the battlefield following his death at the Battle of Lützen; two angels descend from above to carry his soul heavenward, rendered in elaborate baroque relief. The composition occupies the full field in a dramatic narrative style characteristic of early seventeenth-century German medallic art. The encircling Latin legend reads continuously around the periphery of the coin.
