Ferdinand Albert I received the newly created sub-duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern in 1667, carved out of the broader Wolfenbüttel holdings to provide for a cadet branch of the House of Welf. The 4 Thaler denomination — a massive multiple striking well above everyday commerce — was almost certainly produced as a presentation or gift piece rather than for circulation, a common practice among German princes asserting dynastic legitimacy through ostentatious silver.
Welter 1879 is among the scarcer multiples of this short-lived subsidiary court.
