Obverse description Central field displays the quartered shield of the Order of St. John, divided by a bold cross into four quadrants, with a floral branch (commonly identified as a cotton plant, a heraldic allusion to the Cotoner family) appearing in the upper right and lower left quarters, and plain cross forms in the remaining quarters. The shield is surmounted by a Grand Master's crown. The denomination numeral '4' appears to the right of the shield and the letter 'T' (for Tari) to the left. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the circular Latin legend running along the outer rim, incorporating the Grand Master's name and titles together with the date 1664.
