Obverse description Left-facing bust of Pope Pius IX wearing the papal zucchetto and richly embroidered mozzetta adorned with a prominent cross and foliate scrollwork. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair and vestments. The circular legend reads PIVS IX PON • MAX • A • XXII, denoting Pius IX as Supreme Pontiff in his twenty-second regnal year. The field is smooth and the rim is defined by a fine toothed border. A small decorative ornament appears at the base of the bust truncation.

Reverse description Central denomination inscription 4 SOLDI in two lines, with the date 1868 below, all enclosed within a wreath of oak branches bearing acorns, tied at the base with a ribbon. The circular legend STATO PONTIFICIO arcs across the upper field, with 20 at the lower left and CMI at the lower right denoting the value in centesimi. The mint mark R appears in the exergue beneath the wreath knot. The entire design is framed by a toothed border consistent with the obverse.
