| Obverse description | Left-facing bust of Pope Pius IX wearing the papal zucchetto and richly embroidered mozzetta adorned with a prominent cross and foliate scrollwork. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair and vestments. The circular legend reads PIVS IX PON • MAX • A • XXII, denoting Pius IX as Supreme Pontiff in his twenty-second regnal year. The field is smooth and the rim is defined by a fine toothed border. A small decorative ornament appears at the base of the bust truncation. |
