Obverse description Saint Mark, patron of Venice, depicted standing and facing right, presenting a staff or banner to the kneeling Doge Girolamo Priuli, who faces left in a posture of devotion. The figures are rendered in the flat, stylized manner characteristic of Venetian hammered coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. The surrounding legend in Latin reads HIE · PRIOL · DUX · S · M · VENET ·, identifying the Doge and invoking Saint Mark.
