The cavallotto denomination survived in Genoese coinage long after it had disappeared elsewhere in northern Italy, propped up by Genoa's stubborn attachment to its own monetary conventions even as neighboring states rationalized their systems. The Republic's billon issues of this period were chronically debased relative to their face value, a source of persistent friction with Piedmont-Sardinia, which repeatedly complained about Genoese small change flooding across the border.
The MIR 342/8 subtype places this among the later die pairings of the series, produced in the final two decades before Genoa's coinage was fundamentally restructured following the Austrian bombardment of 1746 and its financial aftermath.
