| Obverse description | The obverse is a Spanish colonial 8 Reales host coin bearing the laureate bust of King Ferdinand VII facing right, with the legend FERDIN · VII · DEI · GRATIA · and the date 1813 in the lower field. Applied centrally over the host coin's obverse is a large oval countermark impressed by McFie, Lindsay and Co, featuring the fractional value 9/40 (representing 4 shillings and 6 pence) within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by the merchant legend MC · FIE · LINDSAY & CO · around the circumference. The countermark has darkened due to the force of application, contrasting with the underlying host coin's silver surfaces. |
