Obverse description A halved segment of a Mexican 8 Reales host coin, displaying the laureate and draped bust of King Carlos IV of Spain in right-facing profile. The Tortola countermark is applied prominently within the field of the cut piece. Surrounding the royal effigy is a partial Latin legend from the original Mexican coinage, identifying the monarch by name and title. The host coin dates range from 1791 to 1805 and was struck at the Mexico City Mint. The cut and countermarked surface bears evidence of the bisection, with the legend fragmentary along the cut edge.
