| Obverse description | Half-section cut from a French 1 Écu silver coin, retaining a partial draped effigy of the king facing left, surrounded by a fragmentary Latin legend. Applied over the host coin's obverse is a rectangular or oval countermark bearing the inscription TORTOLA, stamped in the field to authenticate and revalue the cut piece for local colonial circulation. The host coin dates from the reign of Louis XV (1726–1741), and the effigy and surrounding legend are characteristic of the French royal portrait type of that period. |
