Obverse description Bare-headed portrait bust of Rafael Carrera, President of Guatemala, facing left, engraved by Frener, with the engraver's signature FRENER F. visible in the lower field beneath the truncation. The circular legend around the periphery reads RAFAEL CARRERA PTE DE LA RA DE GUATEMALA, contained within a dentilated border. Applied below the portrait truncation is the El Salvador Type IV countermark consisting of a retrograde letter R enclosed within a small beaded circle of approximately 5 mm diameter, punch-applied to validate the host coin for circulation in El Salvador.
