| Obverse description | Central device depicts a rising sun with radiating rays emerging from behind a range of mountains, rendered within a raised circular border. The landscape motif is typical of Central American republican coinage of the mid-nineteenth century, evoking national symbolism. A beaded inner border frames the central design, while the peripheral legend arcs around the full circumference of the coin. The inscription MON • PROVISIONAL DEL EST • DE HOND •:• appears in raised Latin lettering along the outer legend, separated by decorative bullet stops. |

| Additional information |
Honduras struck provisional billon coinage in the early 1850s largely because the newly independent Central American states were chronically short of silver. The federal coinage infrastructure of the old Central American Republic had collapsed with the union itself in 1839, leaving individual states to improvise. This piece is among the lowest-silver-content issues produced under that arrangement — billon at .0625 fineness is barely distinguishable from base metal in hand.
