| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned composite coat of arms of Spain incorporating the arms of Portugal, rendered in the characteristic style of Philip III's hammered coinage. The quartered shield bears the castles of Castile, the lions of León, and the arms of Aragon and Portugal, surmounted by a royal crown. The mint mark and assayer's initial appear to the left of the shield, with the denomination numeral IIII visible to the right. A partial circular legend in Latin surrounds the shield, reading PHILIPPVS · D · G · OMNIVM, identifying the monarch as Philip III by the grace of God. The flan is of irregular planchet shape, typical of hand-struck macuquina (cob) coinage of the period. |
