Obverse description Central field dominated by the large quartered royal arms of Castile and León (castles and lions), with Granada in base and the eagle of St. John as supporters, all within a beaded inner circle. The shield is rendered in the Gothic heraldic style characteristic of the Catholic Monarchs' coinage. The mint mark and assayer's initial appear to the right of the shield. The surrounding legend, partially visible due to the irregular flan, reads FERNANDVS · ET · ELISABET in Gothic Latin lettering.
