| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the crowned quartered royal arms of Castile and León (castles and lions), impaled with the arms of Aragon (vertical pales), forming the composite shield of the Catholic Monarchs. The shield is surmounted by a crown and flanked by the mint mark and assayer initial. A dotted inner circle frames the central device. The surrounding legend in Latin reads FERNANDVS ET ELISABET, partially visible around the irregular flan, struck in the characteristic bold relief of late 15th to mid-16th century Castilian hammered coinage. |
