Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Joseph Napoleon facing right, occupying the central field, with the circular legend reading JOSEPH NAP. DEI GRAT. around the periphery and the date below the truncation. Superimposed on the bust is the Cuban lattice countermark of 1841, struck in intaglio, consisting of a rectangular grid pattern of intersecting horizontal and vertical bars applied by Cuban authorities to validate the host coin for circulation.
