Obverse description Central field bears the crowned royal coat of arms of Spain, notably omitting the quartering of Portugal, rendered in the elaborate composite escutcheon of the Habsburg monarchy with quarterings of Castile (castle), León (lion), Aragon (pales), Sicily, Granada, and the inescutcheon of Austria-Burgundy-Brabant-Flanders-Tyrol. The shield is surmounted by a large royal crown. The mint mark (aqueduct symbol of Segovia) and assayer's initial B appear to the left of the shield, while the denomination mark IIII appears to the lower left. The circular legend in Latin reads + CAROLVS + II + D + G + IIII, separated by cross and star ornaments, enclosed within a beaded border.
