Obverse description Central crowned arms of Spain — a quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and lions of León, with the Bourbon escutcheon of pretension at center — displayed prominently in the field. The shield is flanked on either side by the crowned Pillars of Hercules, each wrapped with a flowing banner, symbolizing the Spanish colonial empire. A large royal crown surmounts the shield. The circular legend reading *A*CARLOS*IV*REY*DE*ESPAÑA*Y*DE*LAS*YNDIAS surrounds the entire design, separated by star ornaments. The engraving is bold and well-executed in the milled-coin tradition of the late colonial Mexican mint.
