Reverse description A large plain cross divides the field into four quadrants, alternately bearing the castles of Castile and the lions of León in the typical arrangement of Spanish colonial cob coinage. The partial encircling legend, characteristic of the macuquina series, references the mint, assayer, and denomination. The irregular flan and off-center strike are consistent with the hand-hammered cob production method employed at the Mexico City mint during the reign of Carlos II.
