| Obverse description | Central quartered shield bearing alternating castles and lions, representing the arms of Castile and León, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The crowned royal arms are flanked on either side by the assayer's mark 'M' (for the Mexico City Mint), each accompanied by a small circular pellet. A partial circular Latin legend runs along the outer border, reading portions of CAROLUS ET IOHANA REX. The overall design reflects the early cob-style (macuquina) coinage characteristic of the first issues of the Mexico City Mint. |
