Obverse description Central field displays the quartered royal arms of Castile and León within an ornate shield: the upper-left and lower-right quarters bear the castle of Castile, while the upper-right and lower-left quarters display the rampant lion of León, with a small pomegranate at the base of the escutcheon. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. A beaded inner border frames the shield, and a Latin legend in Gothic or Roman lettering encircles the periphery of the flan.
