| Reverse description | Central device consists of a large floriated cross of the Order of Christ, with fleur-de-lis terminals at each arm, set within a plain inner circle. The surrounding field carries the Latin motto legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES, meaning 'In this sign you shall conquer', distributed around the circumference. The outer border of the coin is defined by a beaded or dotted rim. The design reflects the strongly religious and crusading iconography characteristic of Portuguese coinage of the late sixteenth century, executed in the bold, slightly irregular style typical of hammered provincial mint production. |
