| Obverse description | The obverse is dominated by a central panoramic vignette of the Montreal harbour skyline, rendered in fine intaglio engraving. The bank title LA BANQUE VILLE-MARIE is inscribed across the top, with the denomination numeral 4 in large gothic type at each upper corner and the word QUATRE running vertically along the left border. To the right, a pastoral vignette of a shepherd with sheep appears, while a cursive text inscription reads Quatre Piastres with the place of issue MONTREAL below; two manuscript signatures appear at the bottom, identified as Caissier and Directeur respectively, flanked by a repeating guilloche border reading FOUR along the upper and lower margins. |
