Private emergency money issued by a Fürth merchant or tradesman — the kind of hyperlocal Notgeld that flooded Bavaria and the rest of Germany during the First World War's small-change crisis, when hoarding stripped copper and nickel coins from circulation almost entirely. Cardboard issues at this denomination are among the most ephemeral objects in the whole Notgeld universe; they were produced to be spent, not saved, and most disintegrated in a few months of pocket use.
The Tieste Va reference places this firmly in the municipal and private Bavarian series. Nothing further is documented about J. Berner beyond the issuer name.
