Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in the traditional clockwise reading order: 寛 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (left), 永 (bottom), forming the legend 寛永通寶 (Kan'ei Tsūhō). The characters are rendered in raised relief with bold, well-formed strokes characteristic of late Edo-period cast coinage. The flat field around the characters is bordered by a raised inner rim framing the square perforation and a plain outer rim encircling the coin.
