Obverse description Four Chinese characters arranged crosswise around the central square perforation, reading clockwise from the top: 文 (Bun), 久 (kyū), 宝 (hō), 永 (ei), forming the legend 文久永宝 (Bunkyūeihō). The uppermost character 文 is rendered in a simplified cursive (草書) script form, a distinguishing feature of this variety. The characters are boldly cast in relief against a plain field, with the rim raised and even.

Reverse description The reverse features eleven stylized wave motifs radiating outward from the central square perforation, arranged symmetrically across the field. The waves are rendered in bold incuse relief, depicted as overlapping arc segments in the traditional Japanese wave (nami) decorative style. The design fills the entire field from the square hole to the rim, with the wave pattern meticulously cast with crisp, well-defined lines characteristic of a mother coin (bosen) used for striking circulation pieces.
