Additional information

Ernest August's elevation to Elector of Hanover in 1692 — the ninth electorate of the Holy Roman Empire, granted by Leopold I in exchange for military and financial support against France and the Ottomans — gave his coinage a new political urgency. The 4 Mariengroschen issues of these years circulated through a duchy actively consolidating its dynastic ambitions, the same ambitions that would place Ernest August's son Georg Ludwig on the British throne as George I in 1714.
