Additional information

George I spent the bulk of his post-1714 reign in London as King of Great Britain, leaving the administration of his German territories largely to ministers in Hanover. The Calenberg-Hannover coinage continued uninterrupted under his name, with the 4 Mariengroschen serving the everyday commercial needs of a principality he rarely visited after his accession to the British throne.

The Mariengroschen denomination, rooted in the north German silver currency system, had been a workhorse of regional trade since the late medieval period. George I died in 1727 en route to Hanover — one of his periodic returns to the electorate.
