| Obverse description | Central field displays a five-line Latin inscription denoting the denomination and fineness: 'IIII / MARIEN / GROS: / FEIN / SIL:' within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, reading 'ERN: AUG: D·G· EP: OSN: DB &L·', identifies the issuer as Ernest August, by the Grace of God Bishop of Osnabrück, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg. The date appears integrated into the outer legend. The design is entirely typographic, with no figurative elements on this face, framed by a rope or cable border and an outer milled rim. |

Below the horse, on the ground line, appear the mintmaster's initials 'HB'. The surrounding outer legend reads 'SOLA BONA QUÆ HONESTA' (Only those things are good which are honourable), a well-known dynastic motto, with the date '·1681·' completing the legend at the base. The composition is framed by a beaded border and the characteristic milled outer rim. |
