Obverse description Central field dominated by a turreted castle of Castile, flanked by the mint marks S and P in the field to either side. A small star-shaped countermark, applied by Canary Islands authorities to validate local circulation, is prominently struck above the castle. The surrounding legend, partially visible on this irregularly-shaped flan, reads KAROLVS QVINTVS INDIARVM REX. The overall style is characteristic of hammered colonial coinage produced at the Santo Domingo mint under the joint reign of Joanna and Charles.
