Oran, on the North African coast, was one of Spain's most isolated and expensive military garrisons — perpetually dependent on supply convoys from the peninsula and chronically short of small change. This 1618 issue was struck locally to address an acute shortage of petty coinage that made paying troops and provisioning markets nearly impossible. The colony lacked a proper mint infrastructure, which shows in the crude execution typical of emergency military outpost coinage.
KM#L2 designation reflects its status as a local or emergency issue, separate from the mainstream Castilian series.
