Obverse description Central device consists of the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms, featuring the five escutcheons arranged in a cross charged with bezants, surrounded by the bordure of castles, all within an ornate shield. The crown surmounting the shield is of the Portuguese royal style with pearled arches. The encircling legend reads JOSEPHUS·I·D·G·REX·P·ET·D·GUINEÆ·, denoting King Joseph I by the grace of God, King of Portugal and Lord of Guinea. The field around the arms is plain, and the coin's milled border frames the entire composition.

Reverse description Central denomination inscription MACUTAS 4 is displayed in three lines within an open wreath of laurel and olive branches, tied at the base with a decorative bow and interspersed with small floral ornaments. The date 1763 appears at the top of the field above the wreath, flanked by star-and-dot ornaments. The surrounding legend AFRICA·PORTUGUEZA· encircles the design along the periphery, referencing Portuguese Africa as the issuing territory. The overall composition is restrained and typographically clear, typical of late 18th-century Portuguese colonial coinage.
