Seborga is a small hilltop village in Liguria whose claim to principality status rests on a disputed medieval land grant and was enthusiastically revived in the 1960s by a flower grower named Giorgio Carbone, who had himself elected prince. The territory has no internationally recognized sovereignty, no central bank, and no legal tender framework — which makes any paper instrument it issues a novelty item rather than a banknote in any monetary sense.
The Luigino is named after a 17th-century coin historically minted for trade in the Levant, a detail that lends the denomination a veneer of numismatic legitimacy it does not quite earn.
