Obverse description Central field features the crowned lion of Hesse displayed within an ornate cartouche or shield, flanked by decorative foliate branches on either side. The initials 'H' and 'D' (for Hesse-Darmstadt) appear in the upper field to the left and right of the crown respectively. The overall design is rendered in a Baroque style consistent with mid-18th century German state coinage. The coin exhibits a beaded border encircling the entire design.
