Reverse description A phoenix rising from flames occupies the central field, symbolizing renewal and continuity. Directly below the phoenix, an imperial orb bearing the denomination divides the date. The reverse legend, rendered in Latin capital letters, surrounds the central design within a beaded border. The composition is executed in the characteristic baroque style of late seventeenth-century German minor coinage.

Additional information

Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schilingsfürst was among the smallest of the fragmented Imperial Counties of Franconia, its sovereignty largely nominal within the Holy Roman Empire's layered jurisdictions. The right to strike coin was jealously guarded by such minor lords precisely because it was one of the few prerogatives that distinguished a ruling house from mere landed gentry. Louis Gustav exercised that right sparingly — surviving examples of his coinage are scarce across all denominations, and the 4 Kreuzer issue of 1696 appears with particular infrequency in auction records.
