Obverse description Central field displays the arms of Bern within an ornate baroque cartouche: a diagonal bend across a shield bearing a walking bear, the whole set within a decorative scrollwork frame. The circular Latin legend MONETA REIPUB : BERNENSIS reads around the periphery, separated from the inner device by a plain inner border. The denomination CR . 4 . appears in the lower exergual area beneath a straight horizontal line, with the coin's milled edge visible at the rim.
